Gencon countdown, win free D&D stuff!

Nerdy never looked so cuteWell there’s four days till GenCon and I don’t think I’ve been this excited about anything since I was a kid. Don’t worry I’m not here to list my itinerary as if I’m someone noteworthy but I am saying that I hope to see you there! I’m looking forward to hopefully meeting some of you awesome folks face to face, and maybe play a game or two.

This is going to be not only my first GenCon but also my first convention ever, so I’m pretty pumped and a little frightened all at once. On top of it being my first of many, I get to pimp Obsidian Portal by wearing their awesome shirt (my lovely wife modeling it seen here) and hand out stickers/flyers to unsuspecting folks who are unaware how simple and fun their campaign note-keeping and organizing can truly be! The fliers might even have a little incentive printed on the backs of them for those who want to check Obsidian Portal out further. But you’ll have to find me or one of my other fellow emissaries at the con if you wanna’ get you hands on them, I’m not giving away any more details here.

Wife and Son in tow we’re making this a bit of a family vacation at the same time, probably take a small break from the con to pay a visit to the childrens museum too. I really want to instill the values of gaming in my son at a young age so what better place to take him than one of the biggest gaming conventions ever! My wife is super excited as well, sometimes I think perhaps maybe even a little bit more than myself.

I have no predetermined notions about the con other than it being awesome, I have no clue what I should do or where I should spend my time. Not being part of the industry (yet!) or having bought tickets in advance for any games or events I just hope I can squeeze 4 days of amusement out of our trip. I at least want to be able to watch the Ennies and catch a seminar or two, drunken D&D and the live dungeons sounded awesome but it’s all sold out so I guess i’ll be wandering aimlessly for the most part. I’ll definitely be picking up a copy of the Castle Ravenloft boardgame if at all possible, and anything dark sun I can get my post-apocalyptic starved hands on. That being said, anyone have other suggestions for me?

Being dad duty means I probably won’t be out till the wee hours of the morning, which is a possible setback but oh well there’s always next year right? I’ll be blogging in the evenings after I return to my hotel, wrapping up my day and it’s findings. Also as a heads up to my readers I also have plans for a D&D giveaway drawing right here on The Dread Gazebo. Drawing details are TBD, but the prize should be pretty cool – it’s tempting to give it away but I’ll keep it a secret for now. The contest will run August 9th-20th with it’s winner announced on the 23rd, and don’t worry it’s not really a “contest” where you have to compete, it will be completely random and to entering will be simple.

Anyway that’s enough for now, going to prep my Dragon Age game for this evening, can’t wait to have people roll up some new characters and get their feet wet in a new RPG system. This is a detour to gain insight for our new D&D campaign starting this fall, I’ve got a new group – carefully selected I might add so the drama llama won’t rear it’s ugly head this time around.

Finally getting my game back on, looking forward to GenCon, and I hope to see you there!

  1. Hope you enjoy gencon this year.

More importantly than all that geeky nonsense ( ;p ) I hope the new gaming group takes off. Nothing worse than not getting your rp fix. It’s been a month since I’ve had any sort of game on the go between people unable to make it and my own scheduling conflicts. Was supposed to be doing tomb of horrors tonight! Maybe next month lol
