I’m proud to be able to bring you guys an early preview and some thoughts on the D&D 5e Starter Set. I’m not going to delve into rules just yet as I think it’s still too early to assess/critique, and also because I’ve yet to actually run the adventure. So today I’m mostly going over what’s inside the box, first impressions, and the overall feel of whether the set is worth the money. The verdict here is the set is definitely worth it if you’re bringing new people into the hobby, or climbing into the DM saddle for the first time.
If you’re an experienced player you might find yourself feeling unfulfilled I suppose, there’s not that much in the box physically compared to the 4e red box, but I think this also has a lot to do with 5e not requiring such a heavy focus on miniatures and ability management. Even though it’s not aimed at the D&D hardcore crowd, I still got a pretty big kick out of the set. You can pick it up for $20 retail at your FLGS, or for 13$ on Amazon, they’ll start shipping out on July 15th. Check out my full review for all of the details!
