My first GenCon: Day 3

My first GenCon: Day 3

Sorry about the delay in posting my recap guys, after spending some quality time on the LEGO pyramid with another little girl who was obviously sick we spent Saturday night and all of Sunday dealing with our extra-cranky sick kiddo.

I slept in on Saturday and then headed to the Claddagh Irish pub to meet up with my fellow Obsidian Portal emissaries for some lunch and good times, not realizing the pub was 21+ my wife had to take our son down the street and eat separately which was a total bummer but hey, just more knowledge to keep in mind for next year.

After arriving, I got to meet Micah and we ended up having a great chat with our waiter who is an ex-gamer due to his DM moving away after college, hopefully after speaking with us maybe he went home and cracked one of those RPG books back open and gave some thought to finding a group again. Turns out I was the only person to show up to the Emissary lunch so I got the honor of holding the Ennie Obsidian Portal won last year and getting my pic taken with Micah. I won’t go too far into details about what we shot the shit about but I will say I probably could have kept talking to those guys for hours, also props to Micah for picking up the tab on our delicious lunch!

After that we hit up the convention again, I managed to get a bunch more good pictures and actually take part in some game demo’s on the show floor. I really must say that Fantasy Flight’s lineup is quite nice, although a lot of the games do tend to seem to bleed together to the point that some stop standing out. I’m looking at you Talisman, Descent, DungeonQuest, Runebound, RuneWars, etc. The quality and production values of their games seems hard to beat though, though I do believe Privateer Press is right on their heels regarding those same qualities.

Gencon countdown, win free D&D stuff!

Gencon countdown, win free D&D stuff!

Nerdy never looked so cuteWell there’s four days till GenCon and I don’t think I’ve been this excited about anything since I was a kid. Don’t worry I’m not here to list my itinerary as if I’m someone noteworthy but I am saying that I hope to see you there! I’m looking forward to hopefully meeting some of you awesome folks face to face, and maybe play a game or two.

This is going to be not only my first GenCon but also my first convention ever, so I’m pretty pumped and a little frightened all at once. On top of it being my first of many, I get to pimp Obsidian Portal by wearing their awesome shirt (my lovely wife modeling it seen here) and hand out stickers/flyers to unsuspecting folks who are unaware how simple and fun their campaign note-keeping and organizing can truly be! The fliers might even have a little incentive printed on the backs of them for those who want to check Obsidian Portal out further. But you’ll have to find me or one of my other fellow emissaries at the con if you wanna’ get you hands on them, I’m not giving away any more details here.

Wife and Son in tow we’re making this a bit of a family vacation at the same time, probably take a small break from the con to pay a visit to the childrens museum too. I really want to instill the values of gaming in my son at a young age so what better place to take him than one of the biggest gaming conventions ever! My wife is super excited as well, sometimes I think perhaps maybe even a little bit more than myself.

DM burnout remedies, what’s yours?

DM burnout remedies, what’s yours?

Recently I’ve found myself going through a bit of a DM drought, I have a ton of great ideas and little motivation to map them out. This is perhaps some classic burnout as I’m the only DM for our ongoing weekend campaign as well as a small mostly modular “game night” campaign with co-workers and friends during the weekdays. I’m currently working with one of my players on remedying this.
